Open source and self-hosting

Chaos is open source under the AGPL. Run your own copy with Docker.

The source code of Chaos is public on GitHub under the GNU AGPL, version 3 or later. You can read it, report issues, suggest changes and run your own copy.

What you need

  • Docker with Compose. The setup runs the Chaos app and a self-hosted Convex backend.
  • A Clerk account for sign-in. Clerk is a hosted service, and Chaos cannot run without it today.
  • A domain with HTTPS for anything beyond a trial on your own computer.

Get started

Follow the self-hosting guide. It covers environment variables, Clerk, a reverse proxy, backups and upgrades.

Current status

The Docker setup has not been tested end to end yet. Treat it as a starting point, and report rough edges on GitHub issues.

How it differs from chaos.fail

  • You run backups, monitoring and updates yourself.
  • Set NEXT_PUBLIC_APP_URL and CHAOS_APP_URL to your own address, or links point at chaos.fail.
  • The integration API and webhooks need the backend's HTTP port to be reachable.
  • Analytics is off unless you set it up.

The license

The AGPL lets you use, change and share Chaos. If you change it and let people use your version over a network, you must offer them its source code. The LICENSE file has the exact terms.
